Colombia is one of the most undiscovered countries in Latin America, with a wealth of attractions from the vibrant, culture-rich cities of Cartagena and its capital Bogota, to beautiful coffee estates ideal for some gentle exploration. In this suggested itinerary, over 12 nights you’ll visit Bogota, San Jose del Guaviare-Chiribiquete, Meta-Cano Cristales, Tatacoa. Throughout your journey, you will enjoy guided city tours, visit Tatacoa Desert on a private excursion and on the fringes of the Amazon, you’ll encounter unspoilt wilderness, swimming with pink river dolphins and stunning tropical sunsets. This itinerary really allows you to get under the skin of the fascinating destination.

Trip Overview

Depart from Dublin to Bogota, Colombia.

On arrival, your driver and guide will be waiting to take you to your accommodation in the city where you’ll spend the next two nights.

It’s time to get to know Bogota with your private guide.

This tour takes you on a journey through time from Bogota’s colonial era to modern day urban life. Starting at the buzzing Paloquemao market, you’ll see Colombia’s array of fruit and vegetables. Enjoy an exhilarating cable car ride to Monserrate Hill, which offers spectacular views of the metropolis. You’ll continue to La Candelaria, the historic quarter, and to Bogota’s oldest church, the Iglesia de San Francisco.

Next, privately transfer to the airport and fly to San Jose del Guaviare.

You’ll be transferred to your accommodation where you’ll spend the next four nights. We will have plenty of unique excursions planned throughout your stay.

Today, you’ll start the day at 6 am and depart from the port on the Guaviare River.

A speedboat will be waiting for you and will take you to Damas del Nare Lagoon. A magical place, surrounded by Amazon nature and a place where you’ll spot beautiful pink river dolphins along the way, playing in the lagoon. You’ll also have the opportunity to swim with these incredible creatures. Enjoy lunch before returning to San Jose del Guaviare.

In the evening, enjoy a visit to the indigenous Tukano community in the Panure Resguardo.

This is a lovely opportunity to get to meet the community and learn more about their unique culture.

This morning, you’ll visit “Chontaduros”, a local farm.

Enjoy some breakfast and enjoy a talk about the production of coca and the agrotourism with the family.

Next, by 4WD, you’ll visit the hill of Nuevo Tolima.

Here, you will walk to discover the mysterious ancestral indigenous manifestations (more than 10 thousand years old), which will transport you to another dimension when trying to interpret and decipher the secrets hidden in the incomparable cave murals.

Today, you’ll travel by 4WD into the dense forest with your guide.

With its incredible vegetation, you will see sandstone sculptures and will visit a beautiful 20 metre crystalline waterfall.

You will have the option to either fly by light aircraft or by speedboat to your next destination, La Macarena Natural Reserve.

One of the best-known attractions is the astonishing river “Caño Cristales”, commonly called “The River of Five Colours,” “The Liquid Rainbow” and “The Most Beautiful River in the World” because of the algae that produces bright rainbow-like colours on the bottom of the river. You’ll spend the next three nights in a handpicked eco-lodge.

Today you’ll enjoy a guided hike to Caño Cristales.

You’ll travel by boat down the Guayabero River and transfer by 4Wd to Sierra de La Macarena National Park. Enjoy your hike to Caño Cristales, witness the incredible colours and waterfalls of the most beautiful river in the world.

It’s time to depart La Macarena Natural Reserve and fly to Bogota and on to Neiva.

On arrival, your driver will be waiting to take you to your luxury accommodation in the Tatacoa Desert. You’ll spend your final three nights here in style.

Experience a guided excursion to the Tatacoa Desert.

Covering 330 square kilometers of land, Tatacoa Desert, or the “Valley of Sorrows”, is a tropical dry forest featuring ocher and grey coloured desert landscapes dotted with green cactuses and bizarre rock formations. Enjoy exploring the desert’s most spectacular parts.

With your guide, visit Tatacoa Desert’s Observatory.

The desert is a unique place to observe stars. Thanks to its’ proximity to the equator, the stars seem to be within one’s reach. The tour includes a visit to the Observatory where you will learn more about the astronomical conditions of the desert.

Your trip has come to an end. Fly from Neiva back to Bogata for your flight home.
