POCKET GUIDE TO GEORGIA
Delightfully chaotic, Tbilisi is the bohemian heart of Georgia. Once a capital of the Silk Road, the city’s historic Old Town is defined by vibrant crossroads of village-like narrow streets and small, charming shops. The Art Nouveau neighbourhood of Sololaki reveals stylish speakeasies and trendy cafes, while the neoclassical architecture of Rustaveli Avenue houses impressive museums and theatres. Amongst the eclectic mix of architecture, some of the world’s best clubs can be found, leading the city’s burgeoning nightlife culture.
Considered to be one of Georgia’s prettiest towns, Signagi is located in Georgia’s easternmost region of Kakheti. Positioned on a hilltop, watching over the snowy peaks of the Caucasus Mountains, the town is made up of cobblestoned streets and charming houses in the heart of Georgia’s ancient wine region. Take a wine tour and tasting at Tibaani Vineyards before heading on a tour of Signagi’s quaint streets and local history. Be sure to complete your day tasting Georgian craft beers at Lost Ridge Brewing, Georgia’s first village craft brewery.
Combine Georgia with the complex ancient histories, amazing natural environments and enthralling cultures of Armenia and Azerbaijan, sheltered in the magnificent gorges and valleys of the imposing Caucasus Mountains. Set on the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan’s cosmopolitan Baku is as rich in history as the rural villages of its west. Traditions of winemaking still ring strong in Georgia alongside a wealth of early Christian churches. Medieval monasteries are scattered across Armenia’s countryside, closely followed by dramatically beautiful landscapes.
One of the country’s most fascinating sights, the Vardzia Cave Monastery is etched into the cliffside on the banks of the Kura River and should not be missed on luxury holidays to Georgia. Mostly constructed in the 12th-century, the caves stretch 500 meters along the cliff face and are stacked up to 19 rows high. Vardzia was once home to about 2,000 monks and thousands of residents who cared for the produce-laden terraces that climbed the mountain alongside a complex irrigation system. Learn about the history of the caves on your visit to the ancient self-sustaining city.
