POCKET GUIDE TO NICARAGUA
Lake Nicaragua is the largest lake in Central America. In fact, due to its size, Spanish conquerors mistook it for the ocean until they saw their horses drinking from it so nicknamed it La Mar Dulce (The Sweet Sea). It is intersected by a volcanic chain which has led to the creation of many islands and islets, Ometepe being the most famous and home to the Maderas and Concepción Volcanoes. Although a freshwater lake, it does contain sharks and swordfish.
Overlooked by a 25-metre statue of Jesus (one of the tallest in the world and reached by an hour-long hike, culminating in a stunning, birds-eye view of the bay), San Juan del Sur is a laidback, Pacific Ocean-framed fishing village on the southwest coast of Nicaragua. A popular destination for surfers and sunbathers, spend your days riding the waves or relaxing on the beach. Then enjoy a romantic, sunset boat ride before soaking up the nightlife in Nicaragua’s party central.
The diminutive Little Corn Island (only 1.5 sq.km in size) is located on the east of the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. Despite its small size, it is brimming with character, an abundance of mango & coconut trees and welcoming, friendly locals. Perfect for those in search of peaceful Nicaragua holidays, while away endless afternoons swimming, snorkelling, or kayaking at one of the island’s dozen golden coves. Come evening, refuel at one of a handful of cafes and restaurants.
Combine with Costa Rica
One of our favourite ways to holiday in Nicaragua is to combine it with Costa Rica, pairing the beauty of the rainforest with the Caribbean shores. It is the perfect itinerary for couples wanting an alternative honeymoon. Whilst in Costa Rica, set out on a variety of excursions including horse riding, nocturnal wildlife tours, paddleboarding and kayaking. In Nicaragua, divide your time between the jungle, Lake Nicaragua and the private Calala Island.
