Introduction

A complete discovery of Japan must include the spectacular landscapes that surround its main cities. On this suggested itinerary, immerse yourself in the futuristic hubs of Tokyo before enjoying the peaceful tranquillity of Matsumoto. Kick adventure up a notch as you transfer high into the Japanese Alps. Journey by cable cars over the roofs of the mountain peaks and experience spectacular views before returning to city life in Kanazawa and Kyoto. We’ve arranged a wonderful blend of city and countryside excursions including exploring Kyoto and cycling the trails of Mount Hakusan.

Create a bespoke itinerary of your favourite sites. Visit the glorious Hamarikyu Gardens, take the boat along the river and visit sites like Senso-ji Temple, Tokyo Tower and the Meiji Shrine. We also recommend visiting the delicious seafood stalls of Tsukiji Market.

Discover the characterful neighbourhoods.

Visit the iconic districts of Shibuya and Shinjuku, buy ancient woodblock prints in Asakusa and explore the foody streets of Kappabashi. We’ll reserve seats in the best eateries to sample iconic cuisine like ramen, udon and tempura.

Board the express train to Matsumoto and on towards Kamikochi by local train and bus transfers.

Though difficult to get to, Kamicochi is a beautifully rewarding destination. Set in the remote highland valleys, spend two nights enjoying peaceful views and sampling delicious kaiseki.

Spend the day exploring Kamikochi.

Part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park, the surrounding area is home to various scenic hiking trails. Follow the Kappabashi Bridge towards the summit of the mountains and look out for wildlife like monkeys, native birds and maybe even a bear in the distance.

Transfer by bus and local train to Matsumoto.

We’ve arranged a one night stay in a central hotel. Using our in-depth guides and recommendations, spend the day exploring sites like Matsumoto Castle, one of the few remaining castles in Japan.

It’s time to start your scenic journey along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.

Today’s journey will include a variety of scenic transportation including electric bus, ropeway and by cable car. After soaking up incredible views, arrive at your hotel in Murodo, which is surrounded by the picturesque Northern Alps.

After an overnight stay, continue along the scenic route.

Witness incredible views on the cable car transfer as well as by highland bus and rail. After a day spent admiring the roof of the Alps, your final journey will be by bullet train, where you’ll arrive in Kanazawa for your three-night stay.

Explore Kanazawa with your local guide.

Start in the beautiful garden of Kenroku-en. After learning about the symbolic meaning of the trees and flowers, continue to the collection of temples at Teramachi. We’ll finish at a local pottery workshop where you can pick up beautiful handmade pieces.

Set out on a cycling tour of Mount Hakusan.

With your guide, journey to the Tedori River and head towards Shishiku Hill for superb views. Admire the rice terraces and seasonal flowers that surround. We’ll take you to a traditional mountain restaurant for an authentic lunch.

Transfer to Kyoto via bullet train.

Arrive in the ancient city and check in to your hotel for your four night stay. Start exploring Kyoto’s marvellous sites, visit ancient ceramic workshops and grab some delicious onigiri and shrimp tempura in Nishiki Market.

Discover Kyoto’s temples and geisha district.

With your local guide, cycle to sites of outstanding beauty like the Golden Temple, Ryoan-ji Gardens and ancient streets of Gion. Stop to enjoy a traditional yakitori lunch in a hidden izakaya.

Allow us to arrange a day trip to Nara and Fushimi Inari.

We’ll take you to witness the giant Bronze statue of Todai-ji Temple followed by a walk through Nara Park, famed for its friendly deer who bow for tasty snacks. Return to Kyoto via the impressive red torii gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine.
