 POCKET GUIDE TO GREENLAND

Nuuk

Greenland’s vibrant capital city is an Arctic metropolis backed by a splendid panorama of snow-covered mountains and boasts the second largest fjord system in the world, which can be explored by boat or kayak. Home to gourmet restaurants, fashion boutiques and the Northern Lights-inspired Katuaq Cultural Centre, it is the heart of modern Greenland. However, as you stroll through the quaint Old Harbour, history and tradition is still very much in evidence and remain strong in the flourishing city.

OROKO Top Tip

Luxury holidays to Greenland are exceptional when experienced on an Arctic cruise. Ideal for adventure-seekers, you will be taken on an exploration of Southern Greenland. From the comfort of the observation deck, marvel at the dramatic fjords, rugged coastline and snow-capped mountains. Whilst stunning to look at from the ship, the views are even better from above on a guided flight. Be sure to keep an eye out for Arctic fox, humpback whales and white-tailed eagle on daily excursions.

Best Time to Visit

With over 80% of the country covered by a permanent ice sheet, only the coastal towns and cities escape the deep freeze. June to August is the perfect time to holiday to Greenland as the snow has fully melted and the sea ice has retreated from the fjords, making it ideal for hiking the spectacular wilderness and cruising iceberg-dominated bays. Winter is frosty and prime dogsledding & snowshoeing season. It’s also the best time of year to witness the captivating Northern Lights.

Unmissable Moments

Due to Greenland’s small population and therefore minimal light pollution, the country is considered the best place in the world to view the spectacular natural phenomenon that is the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). The ideal time to see the lights is from September to April, though in the southernmost areas they can be visible as early as late August. Other unmissable experiences include snowmobiling, ski tours and heliskiing, the perfect way to explore the country’s vast, snow-covered landscapes.
