POCKET GUIDE TO AZERBAIJAN
As Azerbaijan’s capital and second largest city, Baku’s turbulent past, from its beginnings as a Silk Road port city, through its oil boom and Soviet period, is characterised through its varied architecture. At its centre lies the UNESCO-listed walled old city, a maze of cobbled alleyways, mosques, and historic buildings such as the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and the Maiden Tower. Not just an historic site, Baku also hosts dynamic arts and cultural events, perfectly suited to city break experiences.
One of Azerbaijan’s oldest cities, Sheki is renowned for its exquisite architecture, silk-farming and traditional crafts. Located in the northwest of the country, it was one of the bastions of the Azerbaijani segment of the ancient Silk Roads. Top attractions not to be missed during your luxury holiday to Azerbaijan include the Summer and Winter Palaces of Sheki Khan which are situated within the Sheki Fortress (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Sheki Museum of Folk and Applied Arts and the Juma Mosque.
Combine with Armenia & Georgia
At OROKO, we love multi-destination holidays and one of our favourite ways to experience Azerbaijan is to combine it with Armenia and Georgia. Commencing the trip in Azerbaijan, spend four days exploring Baku and Sheki with private guides. Crossing the border into Georgia, discover the marvels of Tbilisi and the extraordinary sites along the Georgian Military Highway. Enroute to Armenia, you will visit one of the world’s largest alpine lakes, Lake Sevan, before arriving in the capital, Yerevan.
