POCKET GUIDE TO HOLIDAYS IN SRI LANKA

Kandy

Cocooned by lush tea plantations and verdant rainforest, Kandy is a vibrant splash of colour amid a sea of emerald green. Sri Lanka’s former capital and a UNESCO-listed city, it is home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism’s most sacred shrines. With pastel-hued bungalows and colonial buildings surrounding the large lake at is heart, the charming city is rich in history and well worth visiting during luxury holidays to Sri Lanka.

Colombo

The economic and political capital of Sri Lanka, Colombo is a quintessentially cosmopolitan city, where British and Dutch colonial architecture brushes shoulders with futuristic skyscrapers and the streets are abuzz with tuk tuks and bustling temples. The Fort, Cinnamon Gardens, Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque and the National Museum are particular historical highlights that shouldn’t be missed on luxury holidays in Sri Lanka, whilst the legacies of its colonial garden routes are still very much intact along its shady boulevards.

Galle

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, built by the Portuguese and further fortified by the Dutch, the historic city of Galle is a delight to explore on luxury holidays to Sri Lanka, with the old trading port blessed with an abundance of imposing Dutch-colonial buildings, grand mansions, ancient museums, and mosques. At the heart of the city is the Fort, a walled enclave surrounded on three sides by the ocean. Beyond the fortress, Galle entices visitors with its idyllic gold-sand beaches.

Yala National Park

Luxury holidays to Sri Lanka would be incomplete without a visit to Yala National Park, the country’s second largest and most visited national park. Originally a hunting ground for the British during colonial rule, the park’s grassy plains and tangled forests are now home to the highest density of leopards in the world, as well as elephants, monkeys, crocodiles, peacocks, sloths, and buffalo. Split into five sectors, two are open to visitors on guided 4×4 safaris.
