One of Georgia’s most fascinating sights, the Vardzia Cave Monastery is etched into the cliffside on the banks of the Kura River. Mostly constructed in the 12th-century, the caves stretch 500 meters along the cliff face and are stacked up to 19 rows high. Vardzia was once home to about 2,000 monks and thousands of residents who cared for the produce-laden terraces that climbed the mountain alongside a complex irrigation system.
