The ancient islands of Greece boast historical ruins, idyllic beaches and iconic architecture. Home to some 6,000 islands, with only 227 actually inhabited, its crystalline blue waters, white sand and hot summers have made it a beacon for wanderers since the dawn of travel. Spread across the stunning waters of the Aegean and Ionian Seas, this archipelago of islands is home to some of the most picturesque beaches and coastlines you’ll see in Europe. Each island is unique in its own way, so we want to share our favourites with you. If this list doesn’t inspire your next beach holiday, we don’t know what will.

Santorini | Perfect for Couples

Santorini is a volcanic island in the western part of the Cyclades. The romantic architecture is legendary, with blue domes, volcanic sands and whitewashed houses creating a truly beautiful landscape. There are many chic boutique properties on the island, offering ultimate privacy and exceptional views over the Aegean Sea. Sail around the island, visit the unique Red Beach, White Beach, Hot Springs and the charming village of Oia. For wine enthusiasts, there are excellent wineries to explore, perfect for learning about the viticulture of Santorini.

Spetses | Perfect for Families

Spetses is one of the lesser explored Greek islands but has a long connection with literature and culture. As it is a car-free island, it is a great place to explore by bike or on foot. Rent a bike from the port and pedal down the picturesque pebbled streets, under pines trees and down the coastal roads. Spetses has a lovely range of charming little coves to explore including the beautifully secluded Xilokeriza cove. Another great way to get to know Spetses and beyond is aboard a luxury catamaran, either for a day trip or a couple of nights aboard. Sail on towards another of the Saronic Islands or around the peninsula of Methana, famous for hot mineral springs and the baths of Pausanias.

Mykonos | Perfect for Couples

Mykonos is the Greek island known for its glamorous nightlife, with world-renowned DJs playing at some of the best nightclubs around. It suits honeymooners and couples perfectly, with an outstanding number of beaches on the island, 25 to be exact. Whether you prefer the quaint secluded cove or the vibrant beach club, Mykonos has some beautiful options. There are many ways to explore the island, from cruising through the Aegean Sea aboard a luxury yacht to venturing inland and exploring the traditional Cycladic villages. For history lovers, make sure to take a day trip to the island of Delos, one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece.

Paros | Perfect for Couples & Families with tween and teens

Paros is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea, renowned for sandy white beaches and charming villages. It still retains its traditions and island spirit, making it ideal for both couples and young families. Parikia and Lefkes are beautiful examples of traditional Cycladic villages with blue-domed churches and whitewashed houses. The island is rich in history and home to the Temple of Poseidon and the Monastery of Zoodocos Pigi. Enjoy scenic walks through the Lemon Forest, swim in the crystal clear waters and enjoy the lively waterfront, full of cosy cafés, tavernas and boutiques.

Kea | Perfect for Families and Groups

If you love island hopping, Kea is a must. It is easily accessible by boat and is beautifully filled with steep mountains, charming coves, olive groves and vineyards. A hikers paradise, there are many beautiful hiking trails that lead to hidden coves and beaches, perfect for those who love exploring on holiday. The waters around Kea are home to several shipwrecks including the HMHS Britannic, the largest ship sunk in World War One. We suggest exploring all the beautiful beaches and coves and snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters.

Crete | Perfect for Families & Couples

Crete is Greece’s largest island, known for spectacular lagoons, sandy beaches and Ideon Cave, the birthplace of Zeus. Crete offers ancient history and a range of family-friendly hotels. The sheer range of activities and landmarks in Crete makes it perfect for all holiday types, especially families. We recommend visiting Balos Beach and Elafonisi Beach, in Chania, where the sands turn a beautiful pink hue. Knossos, the largest Bronze age archaeological site, is a must-see attraction for history lovers. Take a day trip to the islet of Spinalonga, a small island housing a 16th-century Venetian fortress. Afterwards, take a walk around the little island, taking in the breathtaking views and enjoying a swim before returning to the mainland.

Poros | Perfect for Families & Couples

Poros is a small pair of Saronic islands, praised for its Grecian island idyll, just a short boat ride from Athens. Separated from the Peloponnese by a small sea channel, Poros is made up of two islands, Sferia, where the beautiful town of Poros resides, and Kalavria, densely forested with pine trees, only leaving room for its picturesque beaches.  Wander through the whitewashed streets, where the colours of pink fuschia and hibiscus tumble from balconies, stopping in taverns and Greek restaurants. Climb to the island’s landmark – the clock tower, for a spectacular view as the sun sets or venture to the stunning beaches and picturesque forests on the other side of the island, promising all the qualities of a secluded retreat.

Syros | Perfect for Couples

Syros is part of the Cycladic Islands and one of Greece’s best kept secrets. No less beautiful than its famous neighbouring islands, Syros is home to the all the virtues of a spectacular Grecian holiday, without the bustle of the crowds. A treasure trove of history, architecture and culture, and considered a living museum, Ermouspolis, Syros’ capital, is packed with Venetian mansions, white-washed alleys, churches and neoclassical buildings. Leave the capital for picture-perfect bays, peaceful sandy beaches, plunging valleys and wonderful hiking trails. Syros houses a wonderful mix of true island life and quintessential Grecian beauty.

Rhodes | Perfect for Families & Couples

Rhodes is the largest island in the Dodecanese, lauded for its ancient ruins, fantastic beaches and excellent hotels and restaurants.  Known as “The Island of the Knights”, Rhodes’ is home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Colossus of Rhodes. In the 14th-century, it was ruled by the Knights of Saint John and much of the old town is preserved alongside a host of other remarkable historic sites. Choose to wander the stone-paved medieval streets of the vibrant city, lined with top-tier bars and restaurants or travel to the secluded seaside villages and beachy resorts; Rhodes has it all.
