Lake Nicaragua is the largest lake in Central America. In fact, due to its size, Spanish conquerors mistook it for the ocean until they saw their horses drinking from it so nicknamed it La Mar Dulce (The Sweet Sea). It is intersected by a volcanic chain which has led to the creation of many islands and islets, Ometepe being the most famous and home to the Maderas and Concepción volcanoes. Although a freshwater lake, it does contain sharks and swordfish.
