The mountain-fringed Hualien is the biggest city on Taiwan’s pristine east coast and the gateway to Taroko National Park, home to the spectacular Taroko Gorge. It is also one of the world’s leading marble manufacturers and the elegant stone features heavily throughout the city, decorating temples, pavements, the airport and even the train station. Must-see sites include Martyr’s Shrine, Hualien Harbour, Qixingtan Beach and Longshan Temple. In the evenings, refuel at one of the city’s many restaurants or food stalls.
