Seven destinations for adventurous travellers

The world is a big place, a wonderful planet that is just waiting to be explored. In OROKO, we love nothing more than an adventure and have been lucky to visit and explore many destinations around the world. With this in mind, we thought we would share some of favourite adventurous activities. What better way to bond with loved ones than to share a heart pounding, adrenaline filled adventure in a country of your choice. From grey whale interactions at San Ignacio Lagoon in Mexico to gorilla trekking in Uganda, our recommendations are sure to leave you feeling inspired!

Track gorilla on a jungle safari | Uganda

Uganda is one of the best countries in the world for gorilla trekking. Mountain gorillas in the region have been carefully habituated and so are unperturbed by human visitors, allowing you to get closer than ever before. It is truly a unique experience to come face to face with these gentle giants and is a humbling lesson in the importance of conservation efforts as a result of the species’ most vicious predator, humankind. Come face to face with a family of endangered mountain gorillas as they feed, play and groom just a few feet away from you. There are many options for gorilla trekking depending on your ability.

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro | Tanzania

Known as the Roof of Africa, Tanzania‘s Mount Kilimanjaro is the perfect challenge. Spend a few days on safari in Machame before beginning your seven-day hike. With a summit of 5,895 metres, the climb will be a challenge but can be completed by anyone with a good base level of fitness. Watch out for altitude sickness, which can catch even the hardiest climbers. As the highest free-standing mountain in the world, conquering Kilimanjaro will be a lasting memory for years to come. We have just finished planning a wonderful Mount Kilimanjaro experience for our guests, are you up for the challenge?

Explore a glacial ice cave | Iceland

Iceland is famous for sightings of the magical Northern Lights and of course its geothermal baths which have delighted visitors to the country for years. However, for something a little different, we recommend trying out a glacial cave exploration tour. These blue ice caves have formed naturally within the glaciers themselves and are a wonder of nature. Inside the caves, the blue ice will make you feel as though you are on another planet. Each year, the unique caves melt and disappear before new ones are formed the following winter. We recommend visiting between November and March for the best formed caves.

Try off piste skiing | Switzerland

Off piste skiing is the ultimate adrenaline rush and nowhere has tougher off-piste slopes than Verbier, Switzerland. Loved by seasoned skiers, the ungroomed slopes have a variety of challenges to face such as forest, rocky terrain and moguls. The best faces can be found with a guide and we recommend never going alone in case you run into trouble. The adrenaline rush of navigating untouched powder on dangerous backcountry slopes is second to none so beware, you might find yourself looking to return sooner than you think.

Explore Machu Picchu | Peru

The landmark on everyone’s bucket list is the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu in Peru. The fascinating Inca ruins are an iconic symbol of Peru’s incredible history of settlement and colonisation. Learn about Inca culture, from what they wore to their practice of human sacrifice, while enjoying stunning views of the Citadel. We recommend staying somewhere close by such as Titilaka hotel, a luxurious boutique lodge situated right on the Lake Titicaca peninsula. The lodge can also facilitate visits to local Peruvian communities to round out your cultural experience.

Experience an unforgettable balloon safari over the Serengeti | Tanzania

Get front row seats as you watch life on the Serengeti from above. At sunrise, start a wonderful journey high up in the sky and over the treetops, open grasslands of the Serengeti. Glide over waterholes where hippos bathe, watch zebra racing across the savannah plains and maybe even catch the crucial moment where hundreds of wildebeest make a dangerous river crossing. The vast grasslands provide exceptional game viewing opportunities, something unbelievable to watch from above. Upon landing, enjoy a glass of champagne and toast to an unforgettable experience in the skies.

Witness Orangutan in their natural habitat | Borneo

Borneo is one of the best places in the world for Orangutan spotting. These fascinating anthropoids are known to be one of the world’s smartest primates and getting to see them in their natural habitat is a privilege. This adventure is suitable for all ages and abilities as the Orangutan groups are reached via a 4×4 vehicle. Rapid deforestation poses a serious threat to the species and so supporting conservation efforts by taking an educational tour is a fantastic way to help the cause, whilst seeing these creatures in the wild whilst it is still possible to do so.
