The Maldives… not just for honeymooners

Maldives has long been a firm favourite as a destination for honeymooners, so exotic and romantic that these islands have often been described as a “piece of paradise” in the Indian Ocean. However, a Maldives holiday is not just about luxury seclusion, as there are plenty of opportunities for families and groups of friends to experience the luxury beach holidays of a lifetime in this tropical nation.

If you and your friends are looking for a combination of adventure and luxury relaxation, then the Maldives could be for you. With endless secluded stunning beaches to explore, you can either relax or party with family and friends by the clear blue waters. You will get to indulge in some of the world’s finest restaurants, enjoy a wide range of water-sports with private access to beautiful reefs, go island-hopping, experience the famous fish market and shopping in Malé, or try some cycle tours around the various islands.

Many hotels and resorts in the Maldives are catering to couples who have honeymooned with them in the past, only to return again with their young families. Welcoming children is a way of encouraging customer loyalty and repeat visitors, and the Maldivians are more than delighted to do so.

Take Niyama Private Islands for example, which has been described as one of the most mesmerising resorts in Maldives. This resort fully caters for families, and offers accommodation which includes family beach suites, two-bedroom ocean pavilions, or a three bedroom family beach pavilion, each with its own private pool.

Blu restaurant offers family style all-day dining by the infinity pool, with smoothies, pizza and pasta dishes among the child friendly meals. It even offers a poolside ice-cream boutique (not just for the kids!). A dedicated children’s menu is also available at Epicure, the second all-day dining restaurant where you will find firm favourites such as spaghetti, chicken nuggets, mini burgers and soup with toast soldiers! If you prefer al fresco dining, Dune restaurant is located on the beach. Children can enjoy their meal on cosy bean bags, then enjoy some play time on the white sands, while the grown-ups relax and enjoy their meal.

One of the most important requirements for a successful family holiday is a well-run kids club, keeping children entertained while mum and dad get some much-needed down time. The Niymana Explorers kids club caters for children from ages 12 months to 12 years, a unique feature in itself, given that most kids clubs don’t usually welcome children under the age of 4. Kids join one of four cleverly named tribes, Globetrotters, Adventurers, Voyagers and Pioneers, each catering to a different age group.

Of course being part of a tribe appeals to the youngsters’ sense of adventure, but varying the activities across the age segments ensures that everyone enjoys play appropriate to their age group. The heart of the club is an outdoor fun area with a playground, trampoline, splash park and even a stage where the children are actively encouraged to be the centre of attention! There is a full itinerary of activities for each tribe, and best of all, for children from ages of 3 to 12 the Explorers Club is completely free!
