OROKO Tips for family travel

Tailored Family Holidays

Time to spend together is every family’s most precious resource. Travelling with kids can be a treat, provided you plan ahead. OROKO’s tailored family holidays are specifically designed to let you make the most of every minute. Here are some OROKO tips for traveling with children.

Choosing your destination

The first step in any holiday is deciding where to go. You want a spa break, your partner wants to explore medieval churches and the kids want to zoom around an amusement park. Finding a location to balance all the family’s needs can be tricky but we have the expertise to find the perfect versatile destination for you.

Choosing your accommodation

You’ll want a property that meets your children’s needs as well as your own. Many of Europe’s best family resorts offer world-class kids’ clubs so the little ones never get bored, and parents can enjoy romantic days together. Private villa holidays are another great option for families, offering a homely stay with the self-catering amenities to cook everyone’s favourite dishes.

Check your passports

Many families forget to check their passports’ expiry dates before their holiday. Children’s passports have shorter validity, lasting only five years from issue. That means they’ll expire sooner than your own. Renewals can sometimes take multiple weeks so make sure to check your passports well in advance of travel.

Flying

Flying times are important with kids who may be anxious about flying or tired. Avoid early morning departures. When flying long haul, if travelling east to Asia and Australia, fly at night using evening departures. Remember if you’re looking for a jetlag free long-haul holiday, you can do it – South Africa, Namibia & Mozambique! Fly south.

Travel entertainment

It’s important to bring items that keep the kids entertained during travel and to abate any frustrations during unforeseen delays. Audiobooks and handheld consoles are great to keep the kids entertained while keeping carry-on luggage light. Download some favourite family films for offline streaming. On road trips, keep it old school with some classic car games like ‘I spy’. For little ones, pack a home comfort to help them feel at ease during travel, maybe a beloved teddy or blanket.

Landing

Avoid lengthy transfers or travel on arrival. For long haul travel, even where the city your family lands in is not renowned as a travel hotspot, stay a night there and trust us to make this little part of your holiday hassle free and full of comfort.

Itinerary pace

Don’t try to do too much on a holiday. Your children will not thank you for it! They’ll get a huge thrill from adventure and cultural encounters and seeing new things, but they need time to absorb it and ask questions. Mornings are a great time for big adventures, when everyone is recharged. Break your days up, resting at your accommodation between activities.

Home coming

Make it fun and take the pressure off. Don’t arrive back on a Sunday night where the kids have school on Monday. Quizzes about language and cultural experiences learned on the holiday works well with younger kids. Art and scrap books are great ways for kids to commit a great holiday to the memory bank.
