Introduction

There is no where quite like the remote and unspoilt wildernesses of Mongolia. On this adventure, discover the most distant corners of the already remote Steppe. In the far-flung Zavkhan province, ride horses alongside nomadic families, hike through rolling sand dunes and sip on desert sundowners. In the secluded Khugno Khaan Mountains, visit isolated temples and sleep in a traditional ger. Journey through beautiful valleys, riding camels and horses, learning to herd like a nomad and feasting on traditional Mongolian barbeque.

Trip Overview

Depart from Dublin to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

You will be met by your private guide and driver and taken to your centrally located hotel where you’ll spend one night. After a short walk in the main square, enjoy a meal overlooking the small Choijin Lam Temple.

Depart from Ulaanbaatar to the rarely visited province of Zavkhan.

You will enjoy a picnic lunch beside an impressive ovoo (wooden structure with sacred scarfs). Drive through vast open steppe land to your first private camp where you’ll spend four nights. This evening, enjoy sundowners during your exploration of the nearby natural oasis within the sand.

Zavkhan, Mongolia
Over the next two days you will be travelling north through stunning and varied landscapes.

You can opt to hike or ride for sections, with a support vehicle in range. Follow the sanddunes to a range with impressive sculptural archways and boulders. This evening, your private camp will be setup beside a unique cliff embraced by whisps of sand dunes.

Sand dunes, Mongolia
Perhaps you will wake to the sound of wolves within the mountains.

Weave your way through the dunes to the summit where the views extend as far as they eye can see- and all without a trace of mankind. The colour of the turquoise blue Khar Nuur lake below you is made even more vibrant from the juxtaposition of the dunes beside it. On reaching the shore enjoy a swim in the lake before dinner.

A day to enjoy this stunning, remote wilderness.

You will have the opportunity to kayak across to another bay, watch the birdlife or visit a local nomadic family to assist with their milking.

Once back in Ulaanbaatar and freshened up, enjoy a traditional performance of song and dance. Stay overnight here.

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
The scale of Mongolia is striking when you venture West of Ulaanbaatar.

Nestled in the Khugno Khaan mountain range is an attractive temple. Perhaps you will be hosted by Altai who restored this sacred site with her mohter. This evening, settle into comfortable gers at Sweet Gobi ecocamp where you’ll spend the next two nights.

Altai, Mongolia
Visit a camel herding family to understand their daily life.

Enjoy a guided camel ride on the dunes. You may want to learn to distill vodka with your hosts or make camel hair ropes. You will also hike to a small lake that attracts migrating birds.

Rise early in order to reach Erdene Zuu monastery.

By arriving early, you’ll witness the young monks blow their conches to call the others to prayer. If the head lama is in residence, perhaps you will be able to have an audience with him and to learn more about Mongolian Buddhism through him.

Mongolia Monks
Visit the museum to learn about the archaeology of this historic region.

It was once the centre of Chinghiis Khan’s Empire. Drive through attractive valleys to stay alongside Nergui for three nights, your host for the coming days.

Genghis Khan, Mongolia
Perhaps you will want to help your host with the morning milking before enjoying a traditional breakfast together.

Today, whilst getting to observe and/or partake in the the day to day activities of a nomadic herding family, you can decide whether you would also like to spend time on horse back in preparation for your ride tomorrow.

Horse riding, Mongolia
After a briefing, mount your horses to ride to Tovkhon Khiid which is a mountain top monastery within the woods.

Far reaching views across the forest reward you. Enjoy a traditional Khorkhog feast with your family this evening and partkae in the tradition of getting good luck by attempting to hold the hot rocks used to cook the meat.

Travelling through the historic Orkhon Valley, you might decide to visit Nergui's daughter who lives near the country's most famous waterfall.

Visit small ancient petroglyphs before enjoying your last evening in the countryside in your comfortable hotel.

Steppe, Mongolia
On returning to Ulaanbaatar there are opportunities to stop to see prehistoric horses at Khustai or to visit a cashmere factory.

Your guide will also offer the opportunity to visit one of the social projects that they support within the ger district of the capital. Otherwise, you’ll reach the city in time to enjoy the shops or museums before your final night dinner at one of Ulaanbaatar’s respected restaurants.
