Introduction

Once a lively network of shifting intercontinental trade routes that threaded across Asia’s highest mountains and bleakest deserts, The Silk Road is a lingering remanent of an ancient era. Cutting through the heartland of Central Asia from East to West, the route was central to the economic, cultural, political, and religious interactions between these vast regions. Today, magnificent cosmopolitan cities now serve as a reminder of this wonder that changed the world. On this suggested itinerary, prepare for the ultimate expedition across diverse landscapes as you follow in the steps of pilgrims, traders and diplomats through five different countries. From Kazakhstan to Turkmenistan, we have crafted an extraordinary journey complete with unforgettable experiences full of cultural and historic exploration.

Trip Overview

Depart from Dublin to Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Your OROKO Representative and private driver will be waiting to transfer you to your luxury hotel for your two night stay. Prepare for a whirlwind expedition across the ancient Silk Road as you follow in the steps of pilgrims, traders and diplomats through five different countries.

Discover the highlights of Almaty.

Spreading out from the foothills of the Zaili Ala-Too Mountains, Almaty is Kazakhstan’s largest metropolis. Alongside your private guide, get exploring as you pay a visit to important landmarks such as the Central State Museum, Kok-Tobe Cable Line, Panfilov Park and Zenkov Cathedral.

Almaty
Transfer to Issyk-Kul, the world's second-largest alpine lake.

Spend two nights in the Issyk-Kul area, absorbing its beautiful landscapes. Witness ancient petroglyphs, horse ride in the mountains and observe steppe nomads eagle hunting. Complete your experience with a picnic lunch at a nearby eco farm.

Issyk-Kul
Enjoy an overnight stay in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.

The next day, enjoy a private tour of Bishkek’s main sites including the House of Parliament Building, Ala-Too Square, Oak Park and the Ata Beyit Memorial Complex. In the evening, transfer to the airport for your flight to Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Bishkek
Soak up the sights and sounds of Tashkent.

Spend two nights in one of the oldest cities in Uzbekistan and home to the oldest Quran in the world. We’ll also take you to the culturally significant landmarks such as Independence Square, the Opera & Ballet Theatre and the Tillya Sheikh Mosque.

Tashkent
Cross the border into Tajikistan.

During your one night stay in Khujand, take a guided tour of its historical sites and explore its fascinating links to both Alexander the Great and Cyrus the Great of Persia. We’ll also take you to explore the bustling Panjshanbe Bazaar.

Tajikistan
Explore the Silk Road oasis of Samarkand.

Settled in the 6th-century BC, UNESCO-listed Samarkand is an ancient oasis on the fringes of the Kyzyl Kum Desert and is the most famous town on the Silk Road. Stroll through bazaars, stone mausoleums and historic mosques during a privately guided tour of this cultural crossroads.

Samarkand
Spend three nights in Bukhara, Central Asia’s most ancient city.

Just as old as Samarkand, Bukhara is a desert wonder of preserved architecture and design from a bygone era. Alongside your guide, marvel at the city’s historic remnants and landmarks followed by a cultural evening dinner with traditional music and dance.

Bukhara
Set out for Khiva.

During your two-night stay, explore Khiva’s Old Town with your private guide, wandering through Ichon Qala, the city’s Old Town and its various palaces, mosques and fortresses. The following night will be spent in Nukus.

Khiva
Unearth unusual sights in the heart of the desert.

One of Turkmenistan’s most unusual sights, the Darvaza Gas Crater is a natural gas field which has been burning since 1971. Watch the crater’s simmering blaze, visible from miles away. You’ll then enjoy an alfresco dinner under the stars before spending the night in your luxury yurt.

Darvaza
See a different side of Turkmenistan's capital at night.

Once the sun sets, arrive in Ashgabat, your home for the next three nights. With hundreds of marble buildings, fountains, and boulevards illuminated in bright kaleidoscopic colours, the city is best appreciated on a guided tour.

Ashgabat
We’ll introduce you to Turkmenistan’s rural way of life and heritage.

On a privately guided excursion, meet the Nokhur tribespeople and explore a nearby ancient mosque. Complete your tour at an Akhal-Teke horse farm, home to the oldest cultured breed of horse in the world.

Uzbekistan
Transfer to the international airport for your flight home.

Arrive in Dublin.
