Family on the hunt for adventure in South America

John and Laura Sweeney were referred to OROKO by some friends who had travelled with us before. They set up an appointment to meet us and discuss their holiday plans in our Clonskeagh office. They wanted a trip to South America that would invite some adventure into their lives but didn’t know where to begin. Their two daughters, aged ten and twelve, loved animals and the family had been on safari in South Africa once before. They loved the wildlife aspect but wanted to try a new destination and had set their sights on South America. Completely unfamiliar with the continent, they came to us, hoping for some guidance. They gave us a budget of up to €11,000 and we got to work.

South America is an amazing family destination, if you do it the right way. Past the most popular spots, there are pristine beaches, colonial cities and landscapes rich in wildlife. We knew they wanted adventure and glamour, so we immediately turned our attention to Brazil. After a long flight to Sao Paolo, our first priority was to include a three night stay in an ultra-luxury hotel overlooking the natural wonders of Iguazú Falls. We knew they’d love exploring the expansive grounds, surrounded by jungle and native wildlife. We also included a privately guided excursion to the Argentinian side of the falls, so the Sweeney’s could appreciate this amazing natural feature from elevated catwalks, far from the crowds.

For the next part of their Brazil adventure, an exhilarating safari in the Pantanal was on the cards. An ecological treasure trove, Pantanal is home to a diverse population of flora and fauna. Perfect for families, the Sweeneys could enjoy four nights at an experiential eco-lodge, embarking on wildlife safaris and birdwatching trips with expert naturalist guides. As the lodge is part of an important conservation project, it would prove to be educational too.

After four days spotting caiman, anteaters and jaguars in the Pantanal, we thought a little beach relaxation would be the perfect high note to end the trip on. We arranged a stay at a partner boutique property in Rio de Janeiro. Ideally located, days could be spent relaxing on the shores, dining out and visiting landmarks such as the famous Christ the Redeemer.

The Sweeney family came into the office to receive their quote and go through the various bespoke excursions planned with their luxury travel specialist. Delighted with the variety of activities and the amazing wildlife opportunities in their tailored itinerary, they decided to go ahead and book the trip.
